Tunes on Tuesday: DC Days, Bangkok Nights

Why this tune?

I wrote this tune in 2019 before a trip to Thailand with the DC Jazz Collective, a group
organized by drummer Will Stephens. We played several gigs in the Bangkok area including a performance at an international jazz festival at Mahidol University. Will organized a second tour in 2020, just before the pandemic shut down the world.

We rehearsed this week for a “reunion” show in Washington, DC that will feature many of the works inspired by the tours. The setlist includes “DC Days,” other works by members of the two traveling bands, and pieces written by Thai musicians and the former Thai king. The late King Bhumibol was a sax player and avid jazz fan who left a library of songs still
appreciated by the Thai people.

Thanks to Will for organizing (and re-organizing) the band! We’re looking forward to more opportunities to play these pieces after our May 12 show.
