Why this tune?
I wrote this song for a performance at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts
(CMCArts) on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. They asked me to perform in April 2023 at a fundraising festival celebrating the 20th anniversary of the museum’s home in Frederiksted (also known as Freedom City). I played the song at the end of a set featuring vocalist Adjoa, Marsvyn David on bass and Elvis Pedro on guitar.
I was delighted to be part of the festivities. I’ve performed at the museum many times,
including some livestreams during the pandemic and a solo piano set more recently. I also helped them get a grant to bring Amy K Bormet and her trio from Washington, DC to St. Croix in 2022 for a residency at CMCArts.
CMCArts is a wonderful institution, supporting visual and performing art and artists in the
USVI and across the Caribbean. I tried to capture some of the museum experience in the song: art exhibits, Waldemar Brodhurst’s hands-on sculpture classes, and the beauty of the museum building and courtyard.
Thanks to Jessica Parker White, CMCArts Education Coordinator, for recording this
performance!
