Why this tune?
I’ve been working on my singing lately, preparing for a recording session in LA in October. I committed to singing two of the ten original songs on my next album, a fun swinging tune and a ballad. I am working with a vocal coach and have started to sing a few songs in my recent performances. I’ve included my own songs and standards like this week’s song.
“Nice ‘n’ Easy” was written by Lew Spence with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. It was the title track of Frank Sinatra’s hit 1960 album, which earned him three Grammy nominations. Spence and the Bergmans worked on several other songs during the same period, the late 1950s, some of which are still recorded occasionally today. None of those other songs had the success of “Nice ‘n’ Easy.”
As you can hear, this is exactly the type of easy, breezy, swinging song that Sinatra is known for. It’s been recorded almost 150 times since his version. It’s a fun song to perform and listen to, and also a great way to work on singing and phrasing. The relatively simple words and melody offer infinite options for interpretation.
