Why this tune?

In honor of this week’s celebration of Emancipation Day in the US Virgin Islands and US Independence Day, I’m sharing “Be Free,” a song I wrote back in 2018 for The Lucky So and So’s, a funk/latin/jazz/hip-hop band I was part of for a while in DC. The song has a simple, positive message, calling us to rise above expectations and prejudices so we can “be free” to rejoice in our own identity and expression.

I was happy to collaborate on this one with the DC-based rapper Ardamus, who added some verses of his own to expand on the story told by the lyrics. This song was always a hit in our live shows, and has had some love online since we released our recording of the tune in 2023.

The band split up not long after the release, and we mourned the passing of the drummer on the recording, Kevin Childress, in 2024. The music lives on; you can find the band’s songs on your favorite stream, and please check out the video of this one on YouTube.

Best wishes for a happy holiday weekend to everyone who’s celebrating.
