Why this tune?
I’m not a big fan of Halloween, but as a songwriter think its worth having some topical material for the season. I wrote the first draft of this song “Haunted (Not Haunted)” in 2023 during the annual 50/90 challenge at fawm.org. It started in a song “skirmish,” an exercise that gives you an hour to write a song inspired by a prompt, in this case “haunted.”
I liked what emerged, and added a second verse a couple of weeks ago to flesh it out into a more complete song. I shared the song at a recent cabaret open house in DC and may perform it again at Bistrot Lepic this week during a duo gig with Barbara Papendorp. We always include a bunch of spooky songs in out late October shows.
