Tunes on Tuesday: Haunted (not Haunted)

Why this tune?

This week’s tune is another one I wrote during this year’s FAWM 50/90, kicked off by a
prompt: “haunted.” I want to dive into some of the process I followed to turn that prompt into this song.

I started as I usually do by just writing, anything, in a stream of consciousness to see what comes out. Sometimes a story and lyrics emerge from that text right away. This time, I wasn’t getting anywhere, so I re-started with an idea that has worked before, to write about the opposite of the prompt. That gave me “I’m not haunted,” which led me to a much more interesting starting point, “I don’t believe in ghosts but I’m still haunted.”

The rest of the three-part story developed from there:

  1. I don’t believe in ghosts but I’m still haunted. ‘
  2. That haunting really comes from inside
  3. But I’m OK with it.

I admit I’m not 100% sold on that last part, but it seemed to make sense at the time. I may come back to revise the song if I get better ideas.
