Tunes on Tuesday: My Dear Acquaintance

Why this tune?

This week’s tune was written by legendary singer and composer Peggy Lee, near the end of her 60-year career that included over 250 songs and 1000 recordings. She wrote the song with Paul Horner for an autobiographical musical “Peg” in 1983. The song was dropped from the show, and the show was a failure, closing after only a few weeks.

The song itself is a success on its own, a beautiful melody supporting a heartfelt wish for friendship, love and support in the new year. Lee’s recording of the song was only released in 2006, several years after her death. Since then only a small number of covers have been recorded, including a beautiful version by Regina Spektor from 2007.

Barbara Papendorp introduced me to the song, which we always include in our December shows. I think the melody works by itself without the words, a gentle musical message that is perfect for the holiday season.

“And a happy new year to all that is living
To all that is gentle, kind and forgiving
Raise your glass and we’ll have a cheer
My dear acquaintance, a happy new year.”
