Why this tune?
This week I’m sharing another song that I’m planning to include in my show at Blues Alley in Washington, DC on August 26. “No Ducks” was inspired by Carolyn Hax’s advice column in the Washington Post. She had a question from a reader trying to deal with a family conflict. Hax’s advice, trying to be newspaper-friendly, was to try a “no ducks left to give” response.
That was too good a phrase to pass up, so I wrote a song around it, where the singer advises a friend to say what they mean in similar situations. I included a couple of quotes from the column in the song as well.
This song is one of six that we will perform in public for the first time. The set list includes other songs about the ins and outs of relationships, some more serious and romantic than this one.
