Tunes on Tuesday: Eyes Unveiled

Why this tune?

This week’s tune is another in my “Parsha Songs” series, inspired by the weekly Torah
portions from the Jewish tradition. “Eyes Unveiled” is based on a quote from Numbers 24 in Parashat Balak, a translation of the Hebrew “וגלוי עינים” (“ve-galui einayim”)

Balak, king of Moab, called on Balaam, well-known for his blessings and curses, to curse
the approaching Israelites. After an encounter with an angel and a talking donkey, Balaam is inspired to praise the Israelites instead of cursing them, proclaiming that he is one who “beholds visions from the Almighty, prostrate but with eyes unveiled.” (Num. 24:4)

The song reflects on times when everyday experiences lead us to see “with eyes unveiled”
and perhaps improve our lives.

The Hebrew phrase “וגלוי עינים” was the title of a 1984 album by the late, brilliant Israeli
singer-songwriter Meir Ariel.
