Tunes on Tuesday: The Changes

Why this tune?

I’m continuing the song-a-day challenge I started at the beginning of January, managing
to write at least part of a song every day. Today’s contribution is “The Changes,” which started from another phrase on my song ideas list: “sending more condolence cards than
wedding wishes.” That led to this self-referential tune about aging as a songwriter.

I think this is a good first draft, which probably needs more polishing of words and music
to be ready for production. I think this is a good first draft, which probably needs more polishing of words and music before it’s ready to perform and record. One fun part of this song was finding a way to fit in “three chords and the truth,” the classic description of country music ascribed to Harlan Howard. I’m not completely happy with the last line, though. Maybe there’s a stronger way to end the chorus (any ideas?).

There’s more writing ahead; another 15 days (and 15 songs) to go this month, followed by February Album Writing Month at fawm.org.
