Why this tune?
This week’s tune is the second song I completed based on the weekly Torah portions (parashot) that are part of the Jewish tradition. The song tells the story from Numbers 27
(Parashat Pinchas) about the five daughers of Zelophehad … who successfully argued for the right of women to inherit property if there were no male heirs. The story of the daughters is one of the few examples in Scripture of women seeking justice for themselves.
The direct inspiration for this song came from Miriam Anzovin‘s video on the parashah –
find her witty and insightful Torah and Talmud commentary on TikTok and Instagram (and other socials) As she points out, this story is also one of the rare times in Torah where individual women are identified by name in the text as primary actors in the story.
Now back to work on songs for the other 52 parashot.
