Tunes on Tuesday: Theme In Search Of A Jam

Why this tune?

In 2012 I wrote the “18th Street Theme” for the DC Jazz Jam, which we played regularly to close this weekly jazz jam session in Washington, DC. I wrote another theme a few years later, but this time with no session as a customer. That led to the title “Theme in Search of a Jam.”

That title resonates more during the pandemic, which forced the cancellation of all jam sessions and most other indoor music performances. Now me and my fellow jazz musicians are all been in search of a jam, or really any opportunity to play and socialize together.

Dig this detail!

Jam sessions are a vital part of sustaining a jazz music community. The session is where you go when you’re new on the scene, to meet other players, learn from the experts, and show off your skills. For listeners, a good session is the place to go to hear the best local talent and discover musicians you may not have been aware of.
