Tunes on Tuesday: Can’t Take You Nowhere

Why this tune?

I’m preparing for my show tonight at Washington’s
Blues Alley club, where I’ve prepared a set of
original songs and tunes by others that have
inspired me. Many of my songs are influenced by the work
of the late, great Dave Frishberg, so I had
to include one Frishberg tune in the show.

If you grew up in the 1970s as I did, you likely
heard Frishberg’s work in the “Schoolhouse Rock”
cartoons, including “I’m Just A Bill”
and other classics. You may also know his earlier songs like
”I’m Hip,” “My Attorney Bernie” and
”Peel Me A Grape”

Frishberg wrote “Can’t Take You Nowhere” in 1986
and released it on a fine solo album that year. He
wrote the lyrics to music by Al Cohn and Tiny Khan. There are a number of covers of this tune, including
a few featuring Frishberg with other vocalists.

I’m working on some other Frishberg tunes to add
to future shows, and of course I expect to continue to hear
his influence in my future songs.
