DC Jazz Jam: Best of DC!

Woohoo! The readers of the Washington City Paper voted the DC Jazz Jam at Dahlak the Best Jazz Jam Session in DC this year. Most of the credit goes to Will Stephens, who has built the jam into a solid DC institution over the last three years. I always enjoy playing there, in the house band or as a guest, and look forward to many more jams to come.

Speaking of which, I’ll be back in the house band on Sunday April 21.

Coming up in August

Here’s a preview of my performance schedule for August, 2012. Hope you can come out to enjoy the music.

Friday August 3, 9:30 pm: First Friday at the Fox

It’s always a thrill to join Aaron Myers and the Black Fox Ensemble for another evening of jazz standards and surprises. We’re back at the Black Fox Lounge on the 3rd with the regular band: yours truly on the piano, Percy White on bass, and Will Stephens at the drums. The show starts around 9:30 pm, and as always there’s no cover charge for the music.

Aaron and the band will be performing again on August 17, but I will be on vacation and not at the piano on that night.

Saturday Aug. 25, 2:30 pm: MetroSongs at the winery

I’m joining Jason Mendelson and the Open Doors for a set of acoustic MetroSongs at the Quattro Goomba’s Winery in Aldie, VA, part of a regular weekend music series at this Loudon County, VA winery. The show runs from 2:30 to 5:30 pm.

[Updated August 2] Sunday Aug. 26, 6:30 pm: DC Jazz Jam

I’m swapping Sundays this month at the DC Jazz Jam, playing on the fourth Sunday (along with monthly master guest Lyle Link) instead of the usual second Sunday. The jam runs from 6:30-9:30 at Dahlak, 1771 U Street NW, Washington, DC.

The reason for switch is the special 3rd anniversary celebration of the Jam on August 12th. The little jam that Will Stephens started in 2009 has become something of an institution. To celebrate, Will is inviting back the original house band members to lead this session: Peter Runk (keys), Mark Caruso (guitar), Percy White (bass) and of course Will on the drums. In addition, the anniversary jam will feature some young stars of the DC jazz scene: Elijah Balbed (tenor sax), JS Williams (trumpet), and Wallace Corey (trombone) — along with a special MC, Aaron Myers.

In honor of the big event, the evening will include the premiere of the theme song I wrote for the jam.

Will’s new site!

Will Stephens, an excellent drummer and guiding light behind the weekly DC Jazz Jam, has a new web site (http://willstephensdrums.com/), which you’re cordially invited to check out.

Will and I play regularly with Aaron Myers at the Black Fox Lounge (you can hear us there this Friday Mar. 16), and he’ll be in the band for my gig at the Fox on March 30 as well.

Good looking site, Will!
