Showcase tonight!

Looking forward to tonight’s exciting vocal showcase at the Black Fox Lounge, with Barbara Papendorp and Russwin Fransisco singing, and Ed Hrybyk (bass) and Winston Johnson (drums) joining me in the band. We have a bunch of new songs on tonight’s program, including holiday tributes to both Thanksgiving and Hanukkah, in honor of the rare concurrence of both of those holidays this year.

Hope you can come out to share the music!

18th St Theme, live at the DC Jazz Jam!

I had a chance to go through the collection of recordings from the DC Jazz Jam on Soundcloud, and found this excellent rendition of the 18th St Theme from the August 4, 2013 session. Have a listen!

Speaking of the DC Jazz Jam, I’ll be back in the house band on Sunday Nov. 24 as we celebrate Wayne Shorter’s 80th birthday year with a selection of his compositions. Joining me in the band will be Alex Martin on guitar, Craig Falk on bass, and Alan Kirschenbaum at the drums. Hope to see you there!

Looking forward to another fun showcase!

Looking forward to getting back together with Barbara and Russwin on September 27 for another fun evening of song. We’re working on a few new numbers for this show, and plan to invite some special guests to join us at the microphone.

Hope to see you there!

Please download the flyer and share with your friends and acquaintances.

18th Street Theme, live in Vermont!

I returned a couple of weeks ago from the annual Vermont Jazz Center summer workshop, an intense six days of excellent music and excellent food in the beautiful surroundings of southern Vermont. At the student concert that closed the week, I had an opportunity to perform my “18th Street Theme” with my student ensemble. I wrote this for the 3rd anniversary of the DC Jazz Jam last year, and we’ve played it almost every week since to close out the weekly jams at Dahlak restaurant in NW DC. I’m hoping to upload a recording of the Theme from the jam soon; in the meantime, here’s our Vermont take on it.

“In the Lounge” live from the Lounge!

We had another fun and successful Vocal Showcase show on Friday July 26 at the Black Fox Lounge, with vocalists Russwin Francisco and Barbara Papendorp, backed by the superb talents of Winston Johnson on drums and Billy Monroe on the bass. This show featured Russwin performing the premiere of another original tune of mine, “In the Lounge,” which I started to write in an actual airport lounge back when I traveled often for my job.

Hope you enjoy the song!

MetroSongs Volume 4: Get ’em while they’re hot!

Just received a stack of the new MetroSongs Volume 4 CD, which we call “Multi-Tracking” to mark the first recording by the entire MetroSongs band, Jason Mendelson and the Open Doors.

You canĀ hear the latest collection on BandCamp, and buy a physical CD for your very own for only $10 from that site or (better yet) directly from me.

I’m really proud of this collection, and happy to have had the opportunity to contribute as a writer and player on most of the tunes on the album.
